Onion Packhouse Operations Manager

Apatu Farms is a leading Hawke’s Bay family-owned Agribusiness focused on growing quality produce for prominent local and global customers.  Operations span across Vegetable, Pipfruit, Viticulture, Dairy, Export and Transport activities.

Our onion packing operation is a significant operator in the NZ export onion industry and we are on the lookout for an exceptional candidate to manage our Onion Packhouse Operations including the supervision and co-ordination of the grading, packing (including forklift drivers within the packhouse) and phytosanitary quality control staff teams (up to 40 seasonal staff and 3 permanent staff). About the role:

* Management duties within the onion packing facility include implementing the grading and packing requirements for export and local produce. This will require well-honed and decisive decision-making skills.

*The role also requires a contemporary working knowledge of and ability to apply Regulatory compliance programmes e.g. New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries Technical Standard Phytosanitary Inspection (NZMPI – TSPI), Customs Security and commercial compliance programmes e.g. NZ GAP

*Due to the execution of different packing configurations, someone who is mechanically and machinery minded and can manage the packhouse and associated machinery and annual maintenance programme will be highly valued.

*Administer, manage and apply our quality systems, processes and operational procedures

About you:

* Physically fit, proactive, team player, a can-do “hands on” attitude and ability to move with the fast pace of production

* Strong understanding of the quality control function with focus to achieve desired quality standards and react to variations in product and adjust grading outcomes

* Staff management skills, experience in a seasonal environment with an ability to communicate with all levels of a diverse cultural organisation

* Knowledge of grading and processing of seasonal export crops

* Conversant with measures and methods to increase production and reduce costs in a production environment

* Have above average numeracy skills and the ability to calculate figures and problem- solve.
